Historically, the “wise one” would recommend herbs and plants to wash in your hair, rub on your body, maybe chew. Along with a chant to say over and over.

The present day preachers of science would say those were the early discovery of the benefits of clean bouncy hair you can get from shelf products, the benefit of deoderant, and toothpaste/mouthwash. Along with a touch of “power of positive thinking”. The overall effect mostly being to give you confidence allowing you to be more outgoing than you usually would have been. They acknowledge that belief has pwoer altho the belief in the scientific version has been proven to not be quite as effective as other beliefs. Its difficult to put as much power of belief in the scientific answers even for the fanatics of science.

The present day techno-pagan would say that if the original ingredients were 80% of the effect, and the chant 20%. Then using scientifically purified off the shelf versions would possibly be 90% and power of positive thinking 5%. But wouldnt present day purified ingredients with belief in the chant add up to 110% effective?
